Guide · Hyderabad

A home that stays cool
in Hyderabad's heat.

By ANXA Infra · Project 49 · Updated October 2026

Hyderabad's summers are long and hot, and the Deccan has known how to build for them for centuries. A well-designed home can stay noticeably cooler with less air-conditioning, if the design starts with the climate.

Orientation comes first

Place the longest walls facing north and south, where the sun is easiest to control. Keep the west side for stairs, storage and service spaces, so the hottest afternoon sun falls on rooms you use least.

Courtyards and cross-ventilation

A courtyard at the centre of the house pulls warm air up and out, and draws cooler air in through the rooms. Openings on opposite walls let the breeze pass straight through. This is the idea behind the Air philosophy in Project 49: a house that breathes.

Shade before glass

Deep overhangs, verandas, jaalis and trees stop the sun before it reaches the glass. Large windows work well in Hyderabad when they are shaded; unshaded glass turns a room into an oven.

Thick walls and the right materials

Heavy walls of stone, brick or rammed earth absorb the day's heat slowly and release it at night. Light-coloured, insulated roofs reflect heat away. The Earth and Silence philosophies use these materials for comfort as well as character.

Water and green

Water bodies, planted courts and trees cool the air around the house through evaporation and shade, and make the home quieter too.

Quick answers

How can I keep my house cool in Hyderabad without much AC?

Orient the house north-south, shade every window, add a courtyard or openings on opposite walls for cross-ventilation, and use thick walls and a reflective, insulated roof.

Which direction should a house face in Hyderabad for less heat?

Keep the long walls facing north and south and minimise openings to the west, where afternoon sun is strongest.

Do courtyard homes work in Hyderabad?

Yes. Courtyards are a traditional Deccan way to bring in light and move air through the house, and they suit Hyderabad's climate well.

Does ANXA Infra design climate-responsive homes?

Yes. Project 49's Air, Light, Earth and Silence philosophies are built around daylight, cross-ventilation, natural materials and quiet, designed for each plot in Hyderabad.

Building on your own land in Hyderabad?

ANXA Infra designs and builds individual homes through Project 49: 49 homes, seven design philosophies, each drawn for one family and one plot. Tell us where your land is and we will come and walk it with you.
